Mary1966 wrote:I came home from the first game in this series late last night, so I went straight to bed without posting. I wanted to try to get Sidney's autograph, although I knew that since he wasn't pitching any games in the series, he might not come out at all. I showed up when the gates opened two hours before the game and waited alongside a woman and a young kid who obviously were veterans at getting autographs. The woman had a copy of the Sports Illustrated mag with Joe Mauer on the cover, and when Mauer started signing at the opposite end of the dugout, she ran over there and got him to sign it. The kid kept calling out to players as they came by, holding out a baseball, and asking them to sign it. Rondell White came over and signed it, and the kid said, "Oh, man, he signed it on the sweet spot" and shook his head. I guess he wanted to have another player more famous sign it there. The woman said to him, "Why didn't you tell him not to sign there?" And the kid said, "You can't do that, he would find it insulting." Then, Boof came by and was signing stuff, and I asked him to sign my ticket from the game, and we had the following conversation:
Me: Hey, Boof, where's Sidney?
Boof: Who?
Me: Sidney.
Boof: (looking annoyed) He's inside.
Well. I guess I wasn't going to get Sidney's autograph that day.
Then Joe Nathan came by and I got him to sign the inside bill of my Twins cap. The kid asked me who I was waiting for, and I said, "Sidney Ponson," and he laughed and said, "What do you want him for? You couldn't give his stuff away."
At that point I decided to go take my seat and watch the game. I sat in the lower outfield, with an excellent view of the backs of Torii Hunter and Michael Cuddyer.
The game itself turned out be pretty much what I expected. Jeff Weaver had another meltdown; when the Mariners intentionally loaded the bases for Torii, I had a feeling that he was going to launch one. After giving up the grand slam to Torii, Weaver made the putout at first to end the inning, and then he threw the ball to the ground in disgust. Ortiz gave up two dingers but otherwise kept people from crossing the plate.
I took a bunch of pictures with my digital camera, but I was pretty far away from the action, so they aren't that great. Mostly pictures of the backs of the guys who ended up at second with all the doubles that were hit.
I am going again tomorrow and Thursday. I think I might just end up sending a picture to Sidney to sign. My friend who is the other Sidney Ponson fan in this world did this and got a response.

Mary1966 wrote:Hey, the Twins win with Carlos Silva on the mound and I get an autograph from Sidney Ponson! Life is good!
I showed up at the ballpark when the gates opened and as soon as I got sight of the field, I saw Sidney behind home place talking with Mike Hargrove, the Mariners' manager, who managed Sidney in Baltimore. I made my way down to the field level where you can get closest to get autographs and that put me about 50 feet away from Sidney. I tried to get his attention by waving at him, but there were people all around as the Twins took BP. Then Sidney started walking towards the dugout, and I started yelling at him, "Sidney! Sidney! Sidney!" He finally noticed me, and I held up my pen and my baseball to show him I wanted an autograph. He came over to me and we had the following conversation:
Me: He, how's it going?
Sidney: Great, how are you?
Me: Great
(He took the ball, signed it, and gave it back to me)
Me: Hey, good luck this year.
Having got what I wanted, I left and went home.
Just kidding. I took some pictures of Sidney as he and the other pitchers talked in the outfield during BP. They were horsing around, and at one point Boof picked up Ortiz and gave him a bear hug. Which is probably easier than trying to pick up Sidney and give him a bear hug!
When Sidney and the other players went into the dugout as the time for the game drew near, I took my seat in the outfield. With Torii out, I got a great view of Jason Tyner. At one point, Tyner made a great play on the warning track and the fans in the outfield seats started taunting him. Some moron went down to the outfield fence and started cursing at Jason. An usher came over and kicked him out.
When Felix Hernandez left the game in the first inning due to injury, I wondered how many people in the stands had come to see him, and how they were going to feel to get Jake Woods (the attendance at this game was noticebly higher than Tuesday). Carlos Silva again pitched well, he probably should have been taken out before he gave up the 3 run bomb to Richie Sexson, but he got the win, so that's good.
The Mariners tried to rally in the bottom of the ninth, but fortunately Adrian Beltre got thrown out at the plate trying to score from first.
Now that I have Sidney's autograph I can concentrate on taking pictures and hopefully get some better ones than yesterday.
